I-Team: Nursing home closures disrupt lives of vulnerable senior citizens
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Dozens of seniors living in nursing homes scramble to relocate following the sudden closure of two west Michigan nursing homes due to financial difficulties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has left nursing care and assisted living facilities in peril.
As of June 1, there have been 24,998 confirmed cases among residents in long-term care facilities in Michigan. There have been 5,666 reported resident deaths in long-term facilities.
Costs for personal protective equipment and extra staffing have proven too costly to keep some facilities open.
“It was like someone hit me in the gut,” said Pat Honeysett.
